When Do You Fly?
Flights typically depart shortly after sunrise or a couple of hours prior to sunset as this is when the earth is cool and winds are calm. Depending on the time of year you fly, for morning fights we will meet you somewhere between 5:00AM - 7:00AM and for evening flights we will meet somewhere between 5:00PM-7:00PM. Hot Air Balloon Flights are VERY weather dependent and require good visibility and low wind speeds.
How Big are Your Hot Air Balloons?
Balloons come in various shapes and sizes. Our fleet ranges in size from 60,000 cubic ft to 77,000 cubic ft. We are able to carry two passengers per flight.
What is the Hot Air Balloon Made Of?
The main components of a hot air balloon are the envelope (balloon), fuel system, and gondola (basket). The envelope is constructed of rip-stop nylon or polyester which is lightweight yet strong and heat resistant withstanding temperatures of up to 300 degrees. The envelope is open at the bottom to receive the heating flame and has a deflation port, which is a large opening at the top that allows the hot air to escape during landing. The fuel system is composed of the burner, which burns propane to heat the air in the envelope; fuel tanks, which are carried in the basket; and hoses, which connect the two. The basket is constructed of wicker and is connected to the envelope by cables. Wicker is used not only for its romantic appeal, but also because of the flexibility of the material itself.
How High Can We Go?
Most flights do not go over a couple of thousand feet although we are capable of ascending to 12,500 feet before we need the use of oxygen. Our pilots will take you up to two or three thousand feet to allow you to "look around", but the majority of the flight will be spent among the treetops gaining that "birds-eye" view. If you have a fear of heights you need not be concerned. You will not experience any vertigo feelings because you are moving with the wind currents which mean there is no rocking or swaying or feeling of movement. This also means you should not worry about Dramamine or air/movement sickness.
Where Do We Land?
The direction of the Hot Air Balloon cannot be controlled by steering. Balloons travel only with the wind and at the speed of the wind. There are usually different wind directions at different altitudes, and by seeking out different wind currents a pilot can maneuver his balloon in several directions. Most balloon flights will never land in the same location, but don't worry our able crew will be there upon landing to return us to our original launch location.
Is Hot Air Ballooning Safe?
Absolutely! In order to fly paying passengers in the United States, a pilot must have a Commercial Lighter-Than-Air, Free Balloon Certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration. A balloon used for carrying passengers must have a standard-type certification, also from the FAA. Every balloon must be inspected annually by an FAA-approved facility or inspector, and balloons that carry passengers for hire have even more rigorous maintenance requirements.
Priority Balloons LLC has:
* FAA Commercial / Instructor rated - Pilots
* FAA Certified and Registered Balloons
* FAA Certified annual maintenance Inspections
* Perfect Safety Record
* Full commercial liability insurance
What Should I Wear?
Nebraska and Iowa weather can go from one extreme to the other! We suggest dress casual (jeans, t-shirt, sweat shirt, tennis shoes,……) and in layers if possible. For the most part if you are comfortable standing on the ground in what you are wearing, you will be comfortable during the flight. So, dress comfortably and accordingly to be maneuvering into the basket and standing for a length of time. Bring your camera for the breathtaking scenery, your sunglasses to protect against the sun and for those more sun sensitive guests, bring some sunscreen as you are exposed to the elements during the entire flight.
For our taller guests, a hat is recommended to protect your head from the heat of the burners directly above you.
Can I Take My Children?
We encourage families to participate in Hot Air Ballooning. There are a few issues to consider before deciding to take your children. The sides of the basket are approximately 4’ high; therefore, children who have yet to reach this height will not be participating in the beautiful views and may become discouraged. FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations do not permit parents to hold or carry their child during flight. Another consideration, the burners directly above your head will be burning flames up to 10’-15’ feet at any given time. This tends to frighten children of younger ages. Because of these reasons and our previous experience, children under the age of 6-7 are discouraged.
Can Anyone Fly?
For the most part, YES! We have flown people ages 4-98! We do ask that those with specific medical conditions consult their physician before flying as well as inform us of the condition so that we may take whatever precautions necessary to ensure your safety.
